What is “the mismatched interlanguage speech intelligibility benefit”?

James Fallows of the Atlantic has an excellent blog entry on why non-native speakers of a language can often understand one another better than they can understand native speakers. The explanations are many, are written by people from personal experience, and make immediate sense. Fallows followed this up with another entry that expands the examples.

    Sounds like a great idea. I just read a book that summarizes recent research on the relationship of age to second language acquisition, and it never mentions the emotional factor!

    The impact of emotions on foreign language learning is so great I plan to write a book solely focused on this topic.
