Barbara Kingsolver has a new book out, Flight Behavior, that brings together two threads I’ve been pursuing. The theme of the book is climate change denial, but the plight of Monarchs suggested the story she develops to make her case. It is true that habitat destruction and record rainfall literally decimated the monarch population in 2010: from 1.200,000 to 120,000. Kingsolver imagines that the monarchs relocate to Appalachian Tennessee, where their winteringover creates problems for the local people.
